Holy moly, I'm a blog slacker
So, I'll get a little update going. We had a GREAT Christmas! Both my sister and my brother came to Virginia from California and they got to stay with us for the first few days they were here. We had SO much fun! Ian also brought his girlfriend, Teryn, who is this sweet, funny, down-to-earth girl. She is SO perfect for my brother. Ahhh, young love. heh ;) So we did the usual Christmas-y stuff: Christmas Eve at Dave's parent's house in the morning and my Aunt Valerie's house in the evening, and Christmas day at my mom's with the kids and my grandma. This year we did something a little different at my mom's house as far as presents go. My mom gave each of us kids a $25 gift card to Michael's as well as the name of someone else in the family. The idea was that we go to Michael's and use the money to buy something that we could make for that person and that would be our present to them. Of course every year my mom also does stockings for each of us (including those married into the family and dating us) and includes some of the coolest, unique things. Example...in my grandma's stocking this year she put a pair of racing grannies. Yes, racing grannies:

Isn't that awesome!? lol You literally wind them up, put them down on the ground, and watch them go! Totally awesome. And also, if you look closely, they're um...anatomically correct from the waist up. Bwahaha!
I also got the most incredibly awesome sock monkey slippers along with monkey tissues, a pen, and tons of other goodies (B's nickname is monkey if you didn't already know).
And then, for the piece de resistance. The kids and I got together and decided that we wanted to make a little collage for my mom. We had to put my childhood dog, Cassie, down last year and we wanted to get a little memorial for my mom because they were so close. She was my mom's best friend. So we got her this:

And we got THIS awesome reaction from her:

Ahh! Couldn't have asked for better! It's a 16 x 20 photo of Cassie made up of tons of pictures of us as kids, us now, pictures of Cassie from when she was alive, and other pictures of our family. I mean, this thing was truly amazing! THIS is why I love Christmas and buying presents for other people. I love getting an honest to goodness, gut-wrenching reaction from people, KNOWING that they love it. It makes my heart happy. :)
And my favorite present from Christmas this year? This gleaming, heavy, wonderful, perfect piece of metal from Aunt and her family:

*Squeal* Isn't it beautiful!? I've been coveting and dreaming about owning this beauty and now it's mine! It's actually mine! I'm so glad my Aunt works at Williams-Sonoma! hehe She also gave us a wonderful, heavy-duty set of chili bowls and a jar of chili starter along with it, so guess what we had for dinner last week? ;) It was SO good and I seriously got giddy using this pot. lol I'm not even kidding you. What was even better is that AFTER I made the chili my sweet hubby cleaned the pot for me! Mmm hmmm. Perfection. *sigh*
Alrighty...so aside from Christmas I've also been busy preparing my design team entry for Create my Keepsake. All non-scrappy people, prepare to be confused. This site is totally awesome and all the scrappy ladies on it are wonderful! Their monthly kits are to DIE for! No kidding...they're thoughtfully put together and chock FULL of great scrappy goods. So when the DT call for 2008 went out I thought about trying out for oh, I dunno...3 seconds and then promptly began preparing my entry. Heh. We had to design one layout, one card, and one altered item. And here are my designs in all their scrappy glory.
This was my altered item (a 16 x 20 canvas). Actually, this is the gift we made for Dave's parents for Christmas, but no one besides the family had seen it and it fit the call perfectly so I used it. ;)
This was my layout entry. I used a picture of my niece, Samantha, that I'd been wanting to scrap since she'd been born (um, 2.5 years ago...lol) and didn't really know what to do with. I totally whipped this one up in like MAYBE 15 minutes and I LOVE how it turned out!
And this was my card entry. We had to use an everyday object in a unique way and I chose a couple of objects, actually. I used a photo corner for her skirt, metal swirls for her hair, and I cut some American Crafts stars in half for her crown. :)
Soooooooooo is that like the LONGEST blog post from me in history or what!? ;) I'll be back soon to update some more, but this is the last week before school starts so I'm also planning on studying a bit. LAST SEMESTER BAYBEEEEEEEEEEE!! Wish me luck!

I'm dreaming of a GREEN Christmas!
Anyway.
What do I mean by GREEN Christmas? Well, in this case I mean we've greened our tree. Meaning that this year, rather than chop a tree down or buy a plastic one (sorry, but PVCs skeeve me out) Dave (being the plant guru that he is) managed to finagle (sp?) us a LIVE tree...still in its bucket and everything! So when we're done with it this year all we have to do is either plant it in the backyard or put it in a bigger bucket so we can use it next year! :) Cool, eh?!
And, rather than incandescent Christmas lights, we bought a strand of sweet lookin' LED Christmas lights. They use less energy, last longer, look cooler, and are just all around better! From HolidayLEDs (where we bought these bad boys):
Energy Scrooge™
Replacing 70 bulbs with LEDs is like
Planting
152 trees
Conserving
1,274 Kilowatts of Electricity
Reducing
1,975 lbs of Co2
Saving
$140.14 in electricity
So cool! :) We got these pretties:

Anyway, once we get the tree all set up and the coolio lights on it I'll get a picture up! :)
Merry Christmas!

Oh man.
Diabetes Risk Test Results
| Scoring: | |
|---|---|
| 0 - 2 | Very Low Risk |
| 3 - 9 | Low to Medium Risk |
| 10+ | High Risk |
You have scored 11 points . You are at high risk for having type 2 diabetes. Only your health care provider can determine if you have diabetes. At your next office visit, find out for sure.
You can reduce your risk for diabetes by:
- Keeping your weight in control (or losing weight if you are overweight)
- Staying active most days of the week
- Eating low fat meals high in fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods
For more information, call 1-800-DIABETES (1-800-342-2383) Monday through Friday, 9 am – 8 pm (EST).
I guess it was only a matter of time, huh? Lately this is all that has been consuming my thoughts. I am SO overweight. Morbidly so, actually, and my risk of getting type 2 diabetes is progressively skyrocketing. And now, here it is, in black, white, and RED. *sigh* There's no ignoring it now.
Man, seeing it all out in the open is scary! I don't wanna get the sugar diabetes (as a precious priest of a man so calls it in my Friday clinicals). I tested this morning (fasting) and got 117. According to the American Diabetes Association, here are the new numbers as to "normal" for a fasting blood draw:
Yea, so I'm cutting it close. REAL close. A little too close for my comfort. So, since Dave's mom and I have joined weight watchers again I'm REALLY hoping that it will help me get OUT of the pre-diabetic state since it is reversible. I'm also going to start a training program with my nursing gals Kelly and Lindsey. :) I think it will be fun since I won't be doing it by myself. Heh.
So, consider this my PSA for the day. Watch what you eat, exercise daily, and do all you can to keep yourself healthy. Your life depends on it.

O.M.G.

Isn't this THE most beautiful baby bedding you've ever seen!? I need a sweet baby girl to put in that crib! hehe
The best part? It's 100% organic cotton and Fair Trade! Wooot! :) Not like I need it or have the money for it, but a girl can dream, right? lol
Sorry I haven't posted in awhile for the 3 of you that still read my blog. lol My life has been crazy, hectic, and insane. School is taking over my life, desk, and brain and I have no room for anything else. *sigh* Seven more months to go! I'm so excited!
I actually do have a few scrappy things to share so once I get them off my camera and onto my computer I'll share them. :)
Hope you guys are doing well!

The Business of Being Born
The business of being born is a documentary produced by Ricki Lake (yes, that one) that chronicles natural birth and how women choose to bring their babies into the world and the hows and whys of the hospital's role in delivery. Here, check it out:
They're playing it at the Draft House in Arlington and I think I'm going to get two of my nursing student/labor & delivery girlies to go with me! Ahh! I'm so excited! :)
On another note, we just got back yesterday from a nice little weekend away in Williamsburg. We had SO much fun! We went to Busch Gardens with Chris, Jenn, and Samantha and then were able to stay in a time share that Dave's parents own down there. It was a blast! Of course there's always the stuff you have to catch up on when you return. Gah. So...back to catching up! ;)

Raise your hand if you even read this blog anymore.
So I got this sewing machine through craigslist for $35 ('cause I'm an awesome schmoozer) and decided that for my first project I'd do something for the owl swap I'm in. That's right. Owl as in the cute lil' birdie. heh.
So here are some pics. Oohhh, I hope my swap partner doesn't check my blog! Otherwise the surprise will be royned! Hmmmm. Perhaps I should avoid posting pics of said swap then. What'd ya think? Yea. Let's go with that.
Ok, so no pics of that until I actually ship the thing. In the meantime how about some pics of a mini album I made for another lovely lady on SIStv.
I got pictures of her sweet little girls and had to make a mini album for her and then I swapped some of my pics to another member who is going to make ME a mini album! I can't wait to see it! Fun stuff!
So here's what I did...let me know what you think! It's pretty picture-heavy, so enjoy! :)
So if you still read this leave me a comment and tell me what you think? I seriously think this is the first scrappy thing I've ever posted on here! :) lol
Alright. It's 11:00 pm and I have to study for a test tomorrow so I'll chat with ya soon. Peace out.
9.14.2007
Um, yea.
Anyway. Moving on. Gotta get a new puppy pic in since it's been awhile:
Ain't she sweet!?? :) She's getting SO big already! She's following a few simple commands (sit, no [sometimes]) and is getting better about the biting. ;) And Bradley is WONDERFUL with her! She still freaks him out sometimes (mainly because of the nails and she's a jumper) but all in all he is totally fantastic with her. And when I say she's a jumper, I am NOT lying. This girl leaps. Like a cat. lol It's hysterical. If you throw a toy towards her she seriously leaps and then pounces on it. It's awesome!
Oh, and speaking of B. Look at these baby blues!
Alright well my head is pounding so I'm off to lay down for a bit. I promise I'll be back soon!
8.31.2007
Good day.
I got a suh-weet deal on a sewing machine ($30 off craigslist baybee!), it's officially time for fall in my little world, my hubby got to come home early, my puppy hasn't had an accident in the house today (yet), I got my medicine refilled (I feel more human now, trust me), and I finished writing my last paper in my bio-ethics class. Woot! It's been awhile since I've felt this good. I'm enjoying it.
Ok, so back to the sewing machine. I've been wanting a sewing machine for the LONGEST time but those suckers are expensive. I've been stalking freecycle and craigslist for eons trying to find one. I don't even need a new one! I just want one that works. So I found an ad on craigslist for one that a guy got from his mom's attic that hasn't been used and I snagged it. He even tested it for me before we picked it up so I could make sure it worked before I bought it. Coolio, huh? My first project? Glad you asked!

Cute, no?! I'm planning on making a couple of them...one for my niece-y poo, Samantha and one for my pseudo niece-y poo, Emily. :) They look fairly easy so I'm hoping I'll be able to pull them off without them falling off the girlies. lol Gotta love Martha! Plus, it gives me an excuse to go to the fabric store and look at all the pretty fabrics. Can't wait!

Buddha!
I just had to share this picture because it totally makes me happy. :)
Another thing that's totally making me happy?....
That's right! She's ours! :) Oh my gosh, and what it took to get her...whew. Let's just say it was no small feat.
So we leave our house in Virginia at 9:30-ish in the morning. We start driving toward Caroline County, Maryland to get to the shelter thinking we'd probably get there by 12, right? Well, first there was MAD traffic on the beltway, so that wasn't happening. They were doing construction on a Friday (um, hello...worst day and time EVER to do construction work on the beltway) so they had the 2 left lanes completely blocked. Ugh. I'm freaking out the whole time because the shelter closes at 4:00 and I'm super anal about time and wanted to get there by at least 1:00 so we'd have time to play with/meet Shanti (her name before we changed it.. ;)) for a little while and then if we got her we'd need time to fill out paperwork, etc.
So after sitting in traffic for a good hour we finally get through, but by the time we got to the shelter it was....no lie....1:45! I was so annoyed. But we finally found it and practically sprinted to the front door. So we go in and at the front desk we tell them we're there to see Shanti so we can introduce her to Bradley. The shelter doesn't normally adopt puppies to families with kids under 5 so we had to bring B and make sure that the two of them got along ok. But when I told the guy that we were there to see her his face fell. And I could immediately feel my heart start beating out of my chest. He was like "um, they told you to come see her today?" and all I could manage to say was "yes, we spoke with Virginia and she told us to come today." Well, apparently she was at the flippin' vet getting spayed right then! UGH! So our options were to drive back the 3.5 hours it took us to get there (not gonna happen) or we could wait an hour for her to get back from the vet. Yea, we chose option B.
So we end up sitting in Dave's truck for a little over an hour because it is a lovely 98 degrees in the SHADE and the shelter wasn't much cooler. So we go back in and during the 10-15 minutes that we were back in the shelter TWO other people came to see Shanti. Yea, she's that cute. So there were basically 3 of us vying for this dog. It was bad. So after making calls to our previous vets, the lady at the shelter came out and as soon as she walked out of her office Bradley says "excuse me, can we take Shanti home?" lol I swear this was TOTALLY unrehearsed. We didn't bribe him or tell him to say that or anything. It was totally genuine.
And um, my kid's cute, so how can you say no, right? ;) So the shelter lady sticks her pinky out and gets down to B's level and says "if you pinky swear that you'll take really good care of her, Shanti can go home with you." WOOOOOOOOOT! :) OMG the three of us freaked out. We were so excited! So the 3.5 hour car ride was totally worth it! YAY!
And now Elliott (yes, Elliott) is ours! She is so so amazing! And fun! And she can already sit and lay down and she knows the word no and she knows her new name. *sigh* This is totally all I wanted! I'm so happy! So keep an eye out for new puppy layouts! I've never scrapped about a dog before so it should be interesting! :)
That was an epic post, so if you're still reading, thanks for sticking around. ;) And if you have any puppy tips let me know!

I waaaaant her!
Um, hellllllloooooo quintessential puppy face! *sigh* Isn't she beautiful!? Davey Jones and I have been talking about getting a puppy for Bradley for some time now and we've decided that now is that time. So, if all goes well with our application (PLEASE keep your fingers crossed) then we will be the proud new owners of little Elliott. Yes, she's a girl. Yes, her name is Elliott. heh. If you watch Scrubs you'll understand.
Anyhow...she's an 8 week old terrier mix that was abandoned at a shelter in Maryland and as soon as we saw her on petfinder we knew she was the one. So we sent in the application this afternoon and I called to confirm they got it (because I'm THAT neurotic) and they did! So, it takes 3-4 days for them to review the application and they said after that they would contact us. My heart is in my stomach! I want this little pup so badly! Gah!
So, cross your fingers and wish us luck that our app goes through and that no one snatches this cute little girl out from under us. ;)
I'll keep you updated!

...Dreamy...
There is no way you can listen to this girl sing and NOT swoon. Seriously. Her voice is stunning. Clear. Simple. Just amazing!
I am SO glad I found her. I get all sway-ey and happy when I listen to her. Awesome stuff.
Listen for yourself. Tell me you like her. That'll make me all sway-ey and happy, too. ;)

Goodies!
Well, today's that day for me. :)
I found THE most awesome website and I'm baffled as to how I knew nothing of it until now! It's fantastic! Delight.com is a clever site with some awesomely random goodies. The coolest part about this website is that every 24 hours they feature one new item to put on sale! How cool is that?!
Here are a few of my favorites:
These A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E hand towels and coasters, first of all! They sport my favorite color combo of orange, teal, and lime green and the trees and woodgrain patterns are flippin' too cute for words!
And then holy cow! How CUH-UTE are these little notebooks!? I'm totally digging on the little birdies and the color combination is to DIE for! The coolest part, though, is that they're made from 100% recycled paper and are 100% recyclable! :) Direct from Delight.com:
"This set of Ecojot notebooks speaks for itself: 100% recycled + recycleable; 100% post-consumer waste; no new trees were cut to make these notebooks; paper is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council; glues & inks are vegetable based + biodegradable; the mill used to make the paper uses clean, affordable biogas (recovered landfill gases) as their alternative power source"
Good times! :) So not only are you getting a super cute notebook, but you are backing a company that looks out for the environment. Totally can't beat that!
Enjoy, guys!

Why why WHY?
So I'm online at Petfinder last night and I come across this little beauty. And my heart jumps. And I sigh. And I end up staring at her for what seemed like HOURS. Is she not stunning!?
Ahhhhh! My heart just pounds when I look at her! So SO sweet! Her name is Trixie (although I desperately want to re-name her Chandler) and the shelter said they found her abandoned with her little brother in someone's yard...poor little thing. :( But man, isn't it true what they say about puppy eyes!? She could have ANYTHING her sweet little heart desired if she looked at me like that! lol
And then, we did some research. She's a mix. A mut. LOVE it. But she's got some pomeranian in her and that would literally CHOKE my allergy-ridden husband. Too bad I actually like him. lol So unfortunately this sweet little girl won't be joining our home. :( So for now I have her picture on my computer desktop and every once in awhile I click on my desktop icon so I can take a peek at her sweet little self. *sigh*
If anyone has a magic spell that helps people overcome allergies I would be forever grateful if you'd share it with me! :) EMAIL ME! Hehe.

LOVE this video.
It is so completely stuck in my head that I'm sharing the beautiful torture with you. Enjoy. :)

Mission Organic
But I came across this awesome site that I HAD to share with you guys!
Mission Organic's mission (heh) is to increase people's consumption of organic items to 1 in 10. So 1 item in your shopping cart out of 10 should be an organic item. Whether it be produce, milk, meat, pasta, whatever! By doing so we can keep the earth and our bodies clean from pesticides.
At their site they also offer a free downloadable starter kit that gives you a ton of information on what "organic" means, how you can incorporate organic foods into your family's budget and it even gives you recipes and links to other sites to help you on your quest to increase the amount of organic foods you consume.
So go take a gander when you get a minute. ;) It's an awesome site!
